The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy on Thursday announced $106 million in funding for 37 research projects aimed at energy breakthroughs.

The projects, to be done by university and corporate researchers, are in “electrofuels,” or making liquid fuels from electricity; improved auto batteries; and materials for capturing carbon dioxide. It’s the second round of awards given out by ARPA-E, a U.S. Department of Energy agency created to pursue high-risk, high-reward clean-energy technologies.

The electrofuels projects were awarded primarily to university groups, with many focusing on engineering microorganisms to create liquid fuels, such as butanol or other biofuels. The goal is to design these microbes so that they can be “fed” from renewable sources, such as electricity from a solar panel or carbon dioxide.

The battery research grants, which tend more toward early-stage companies, were awarded to pursue alternative battery chemistries and low-cost manufacturing techniques.

For example, start-up Planar Energy Devices received over $4 million to pursue its solid-state battery, which can be manufactured with a roll-to-roll production process. Among the others are ReVolt Technologies which received over $5 million to continue development of a zinc-based flow battery, and PolyPlus Battery, which is working with Dow Corning to design lithium air batteries for vehicles.

The third category is aimed at finding materials, such as membrane and catalysts, for capturing carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired power plants.

ARPA-E was funded for the first time last year with a budget of $400 million, but it has not yet been funded for a second year. Perhaps because it has a lofty mission of reinventing energy through technology, it has captured the attention of many entrepreneurs and scientists.

Forward Tom Heinemann scored the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Tim Melia recorded the shutout as the Charleston Battery defeated the Real Maryland Monarchs, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Richmond Montgomery High School.

Heinemann scored on the hour mark after dispossessing Monarchs goalkeeper Brian Levry in the penalty area and then tapping home unchallenged for his first goal of the season. The win lifts Charleston (2-0-1, 7 points) into first place in the USL Second Division.

Real Maryland flew at the Battery from kickoff and came close to scoring in the opening minute as the ball was worked in to striker Israel Sesay. Sesay hit a first-time effort from 20 yards out, but Melia managed to make a diving save.

In the 14th minute, Charleston earned a deep throw and managed to set the ball back to forward Amaury Nunes just inside the 18-yard box. Nunes’ shot rose just over the crossbar, though.

In the 38th minute, tempers frayed as Heinemann was knocked to the ground in an off-the-ball incident with Monarchs defender Gareth Evans. In the ensuing argument, Charleston head coach Mike Anhaeuser was ejected from the game.

The Battery had another chance just before halftime as midfielder Rudolph Mayard ran through from the halfway line. Mayard cut to the left of his defender just outside the box but saw his driven left-footed shot saved.

After halftime, Melia was called into action several times, including a terrific save in the 59th minute as he palmed away a stinging free-kick that managed to get through the defensive wall.

A minute later, the Battery finally went ahead as Heinemann took advantage of a poor decision by the Real Maryland goalkeeper, who tried to dribble past him from the bye-line. Heinemann won the tackle, stepped across to the middle of the goal and scored.

China BAK Battery, Inc. (CBAK: News ) reported a net loss for the second quarter of $2.5 million or $0.04 per share, compared to a net loss of $5.7 million or $0.10 per share in the same quarter last year.

Net revenues for the second quarter were $50.4 million, up from $40.8 million in the previous year quarter.

The company’s CFO Jun Zou said, “After careful scrutiny of our performance in first half of full year 2010 we found that the business recovery in certain segments is likely to be slower than we expected. As a result, we believe it is prudent to revise our revenue guidance to approximately $220 million for full year 2010. We expect to show positive operating income and EBITDA in the second half of the fiscal year.”

Newport authorities say a battery charger has been pinpointed as the cause of a fire at a marina that destroyed two boats and damaged two others.

No injuries were reported in the fires, which appear to have started in the cabin of 1 of the dry-docked boats at Casey’s Marina on Waite’s Wharf.

Newport Fire Chief Peter Kirwin says the cause has been classified as accidental.

1 of the boats, a 47-year-old yacht, was undergoing restorations. That boat and the others were stored closely together in a parking lot, which caused the fire to spread rapidly.

Gum Plus backup battery

It’s bad enough watching your phone charge dip into the red, but when you’re miles from a plug and the backup battery is almost gone, it’s probably time to consider either: (a) Chucking all the toys and moving to Kuala Lumpur; or (b) picking up a Gum Plus backup charger from Just Mobile.

What works: The swanky aluminum-case battery, which has a total of one button and five lights, charges your iPhone “up to four times” on one charge of its own. While I didn’t test to see if it really charges a phone to 90 percent in an hour, it did seem to bring mine back to life in short order after a total draining. While built specifically for the iPhone and iPod, it will juice other brands of smart phones and gadgets that can be charged via USB connections. The unit comes with the appropriate cords to charge it from a laptop or other USB slot.

Not so much: Read the directions. You have to hook it up to the phone first, then hit the sole button to begin charging. Also, you have to turn it off when finished or it continues to run down. Don’t be too impressed by the “5 LED indicators” because each green light is the size of a pinprick and, frankly, a little hard to see.

Cassaundra Rogers moved to the Lowcountry 10 years ago, but has kept her Minnesota ties.

The Minneapolis native and Battery Creek High volleyball standout initially wanted to return to her home state for college. A visit and offer from Converse College persuaded her to do otherwise.

“I got a better offer here,” she said.

Rogers signed this week to play volleyball for the Valkyries, disappointing several schools from several different states.

Rogers, who has played three years for the Beaufort Volleyball Club, created a website during her junior season to promote herself. She then began e-mailing potential suitors and sending her highlight video. Responses began to flow from schools in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland and New York. Rogers also heard from Francis Marion and Columbia College.

But Converse sent the most correspondence.

“I never really paid any attention to it until I started talking to the coach,” Rogers said. “I realized the school had my major. And it has a really good (volleyball ) program. It’s got so much potential.”

Converse volleyball finished 6-29 in 2009 and were 2-15 in conference play. The Valkyries were winless (0-19) on the road.

That’s the potential Rogers mentioned more than once. A November visit allowed her to meet the coaching staff and future teammates. She said she was sold on the camraderie and campus feel.

The 6-foot-1 standout plays on the right side. She said Converse coach Regina Schantz told her she would have a chance to play as a freshman.

“She told us (freshmen) that we won’t get as much playing time as a sophomore or junior, but we will still see the court, which I really like,” Rogers said.

FAST FACTS:
Marco McClendon charged with two felony counts
WMPD: Councilman choked his girlfriend after learning of pregnancy
Fellow council members unsure how conviction would affect council seat

(West Memphis, AR 4/21/10) A popular councilman crowned himself “King,” just before police hauled him off to jail for domestic battery.

Marco McClendon now faces two felony charges, after a fight with his girlfriend Tuesday night. He faced a judge Wednesday, and then he dodged our cameras.

West Memphis Police Chief Bob Paudert called the councilman a “thug,” a “coward,” and a “pimp.” No doubt there’s bad blood there, but Paudert said these are not trumped up charges.

Police rushed to his house around 9:30 p.m. to find McClendon and his girlfriend sitting in his parked car in the driveway. Police say an argument turned violent after she asked him about his other girlfriends.

“He told him last night that she was pregnant and that was part of what the argument started about,” said Paudert. “Grabs her by the throat with both hands and put both hands around her next and starts chocking her. She thought she was going to pass out, she thought she was going to die.”

The police report says “officers observed marks and redness” on her neck that Paudert says were visible the next day. The police chief says the councilman at first admitted his mistake and begged officers to let him go. Then the report says McClendon declared himself “THE KING OF WEST MEMPHIS” before heading to jail.

“I was mystified, basically in a state of shock,” said fellow council member Lorraine Robinson, who sat by his side in court. “I do believe in his innocence. I’ve known Marco for a long, long time and I don’t know him to be this caliber of person.”

“I don’t like him,” said Paudert, who says, despite years of bad blood, the charges only increased to felonies after police learned the victim is pregnant. He says the charges speak for themselves and are not politically motivated.

“What concerns me is his position of authority in this city,” said Chief Paudert. “What message is he sending to our youth?”

Right after court, McClendon posted a five thousand dollar bond. Robinson says her friend at one point wanted to run for mayor. There’s no telling how these charges will affect his political career.

Misdemeanor battery charge

A judge today threw out a misdemeanor battery charge involving a woman who was accused of hitting an airport security worker during a dispute over bringing applesauce and other items onto a plane at Bob Hope Airport.

Prosecutors charged Nadine Kay Hays, 58, who was traveling to Nashville with her mother, with the  battery charge after the reported fight with the Transportation Security Administration agent last April. The agent claimed that Hays made a fist and struck her on the hand during the tussle.

Hays denied striking the agent, arguing that she merely brought down her hand to keep agents from taking away her 93-year-old mother’s applesauce, cheese and milk, which were inside a cooler.

“I am not going to plead guilty to something I didn’t do. I’m a person of character,” Hays, whose mother died last month, told the Glendale News Press. “I end up reliving this disaster every spare moment of my life. You just flash back and you see these scenes over and over.”

Government joint business recycling old mobile phones batteries

Taiyuan, Waste Management, according to Deputy Director of Living Guotian Lan introduced a mobile phone battery will contain cadmium can contaminate 60,000 liters of water, which is equivalent to three Olympic swimming pools of capacity. 1000 cell phone battery pollution than a small paper mill with fairly. And cadmium are heavy metals, can not be degraded in nature, can only transfer. In other words, once the water or soil contamination, water or soil can not rely on their own purification will eliminate pollution, and bio-accumulate heavy metals easily. For humans, chronic cadmium poisoning clinical manifestations of emphysema, bone changes, anemia, long-term consumption of cadmium contaminated water and food, can lead to bone pain disease. Cadmium into the human body, skeletal deformities caused by osteomalacia, severe form of natural fractures, even death. In addition to cadmium, charger, lithium battery inside the copper, aluminum, plastic, electrolytes, and other nonferrous metals also causing serious environmental damage.
Nearly half of respondents: “If it is free recycling, would rather throw away”
To understand the status of mobile phone battery recycling, visit some of the waste and recycling of mobile phone repair shop shop. “Recycling batteries can make money?” Jiefang a person in charge of recycling shop, even have to see if I can recall renovation, to renovate, then will be able to make money, but the cell phone battery technology performance testing require specialized equipment, the general mobile phone repair shop simply can not detect the quality of the merits of the battery, so mobile phone shops and repair shops are not willing to do such a thankless business.
In 2005, the communications equipment manufacturers, operators launched mobile phones and accessories for recycling waste, “Green Box Environmental Protection Plan” was officially launched in Taiyuan. To this end, many cell phone business hall of Taiyuan, the phone call center equipped with the “green box.” But the visit to the provincial capital of Nokia, Samsung and other call center found that “green box” mostly empty.
As a government department, cell phone batteries for recycling waste a lot of work to do. Guotian Lan said the sanitation department for many years in the community, schools, shopping malls and other places to set a lot of waste battery recycling boxes, but mostly collect button batteries, ordinary batteries, used cell phone batteries little.
“If you set up a special cell phone waste battery recycling point, you would like to send your home battery recycling, please?” In the questionnaire, set up this problem. Survey Nearly half of respondents believe that if there are some incentives, they will consider running to the specified phone battery collection points. If it is free recycling, they would rather throw away the battery or on the home.
Jin Sicheng respondents: The Government should set up joint business recovery channel
Through surveys, each of whom has at least a cell phone, If you press a mobile phone with two batteries, 83 respondents, the less there are 166 cells, but only a small part of these batteries sold with the phone recovery business. The survey of the recycling business, these batteries or sell refurbished with the phone, or through direct when the garbage disposal dismantling, which is obviously causing pollution to the environment.
So how should mobile phone battery scrap it? Guo Tianlan introduction, although the mobile phone battery will pollute the environment, but has a ton of cell phone batteries can be extracted from 100 grams of gold, and general gold ore (sand) with only 5 grams per tonne gold content, high-grade ore, but also dozens of grams of . “Or should be recovered by professional treatment agencies to deal with.” Survey, nearly Liu Cheng respondents believe that mobile phone battery recycling points set up by the professional sector. However, according to Guo Tianlan, at present there is no professional body to deal with the provincial capital also discarded cell phone batteries, but also a lack of cell phone battery recycling laws.
It is understood there have only been a “waste battery pollution control technology policy”, which provides that “the battery manufacturers and importers of rechargeable batteries should bear responsibility for recycling waste”, but this is technology policy, on duty, no units punitive measures, it should not achieve in real life the role of prevention and control. “Therefore, to establish a complete waste batteries and other electronic products recycling system, necessary for the state mandatory supervision.” Guo Tianlan that only under the supervision of the State, e-waste processing companies in the recycling process to ensure the safe disposal only the use of advanced process equipment, the same policies also help to mobilize the enthusiasm of business recovery and enhanced user awareness.
Investigation for nearly forty percent of respondents believe that the Government should come forward to establish joint mobile phone recycling business uniform channels.
