American University in Mechanical Engineering and MIT materials science and engineering researchers in the June 21, 2010 announced the development of a lithium-ion battery with a new carbon nanotube electrode material, which is based on nanotubes surface functional groups of the oxidation-reduction reaction. The electrode a few microns thick, allows reversible lithium storage capacity of up to weight of 200 mAh g-1 electrode, also available electrode power 100 kW kg -1, cycle life of more than several thousand times the performance and electrochemical capacitors can be comparable to the electrode.

Stacked layer assembly for the electrode, the electrode was in no additives, high density and function of the composition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The facility to use carbon nanotubes as a cathode electrode, lithium titanium oxide as the anode, the weight of energy than conventional electrochemical capacitors to 5 times higher than the power output than conventional lithium-ion batteries 10 times.

Its performance due to good electrode conduction of ions and electrons, and the nanotube surface and efficient lithium storage.

Although this electrode can be used in small portable devices at first, but further research will be used for larger applications
